About Pura Vida Recovery
Pura Vida Recovery is a men’s non-profit active sober community center. The mission is to empower men to create their own unique sustainable recovery. We offer a variety of activities and services, including addiction support, wellness programs, community building, and workshops.
We began in 2014, when Shawn Kingsbury the founder, was rebuilding his life after decades of drug and alcohol abuse. He chose the name Pura Vida, which means “pure life” or “pure living” to represent the recovery empowerment movement. Pura Vida Recovery has transformed over the years from a few men hiking together into an organization dedicated to the transformation of individuals into their most empowered authentic selves.
Pura Vida Recovery is changing the lives of many residents in the Spokane, WA region. It is a sacred space where those in recovery can find a pathway to a clean and better life through a holistic approach built upon peer-to-peer connection. Pura Vida Recovery is not just a place to keep men from not drinking or using drugs. It is a place to build camaraderie, a place to become empowered, and a place to build future leaders in the community.

Breaking Through The System
Addiction is a crippling, devastating, all encompassing disorder. It tears apart the individual, the family, the community, and society. The United States has been battling the “War On Drugs” for the past 40 years, only to lose.
The current statistics for drug and alcohol relapse rates are shocking. It is estimated that 60-90 percent of people seeking recovery will not achieve long-term sobriety. Many will be caught in the revolving door of jails, prisons, and institutions.
Overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. More people die from drugs and alcohol overdoses than car accidents. The sad reality is a majority of people will never have the opportunity to live a fulfilled, productive life.
Society has come to a crossroads. We stand on the edge of something new. A new era of education, research, and understanding is before us. PVR has made the choice to be part of the solution, which is why we have created the recovery empowerment movement.
We believe that by providing people a community space, resources, services, and choices built upon empowering the person, great change will happen. That change will be in the form of people actually achieving sustainable long-term sobriety.
What We Are Not
Pura Vida Recovery is a non-profit active sober community center for men. We are not a rehab, sober house, detox center, drug court, or a state run outpatient program. We do not give any medical or professional advice on how or what people should do for their recovery. Nor do we endorse or promote one method of addiction recovery.
